Sometimes, with the very best intentions, we head off down the wrong path in life. Probably there was no way of knowing it was the wrong path without trying. There is absolutely no shame in admitting it once you realise it’s not getting you where you want to be. For example, when you realise you don’t have what it takes to run your own salon, or be a great spa manager, or that you don’t have what it takes to do this job justice, or you’re not enjoying a college course or the hours you have to put into late nights puts too much strain on your family life – it takes guts to admit this to yourself or to say it out loud. But, recognise this is not quitting – because this takes courage.
Quitting is when you give up because you can’t be bothered putting in the effort, don’t want to work hard or you’re scared of failure. It takes resilience to get on with things without complaint. However, know when you are beaten. Recognise when you have taken a wrong turning, admit this honestly to yourself and then put yourself back on track. Understand that nobody is good at everything and sometimes you have to try things out in order to find out if that is for you or not.
As one door closes, another always opens. Know when it is time to put your hands up and declare to yourself ‘you know, this isn’t for me’ without shame or guilt. See what is staring you in the face. Do not start to criticise yourself in any way – instead applaud yourself for having the good sense to move on to something else that motivates and excites you. We work in an industry that offers wide and very diverse career opportunities. Stick with it until you find your own path and move on when it’s time to!
